Lying on the River Dee in the shadow of 3786ft
Lochnagar and one-time spa, where Prince Albert purchased an old tower house
nearby and converted it into Balmoral Castle for Queen Victoria in 1852. The
town was largely created by Francis Farquson after an old woman apparently
cured herself of a skin condition at the foot of Pannanich Hill. Nearby, the
Birkhall estate, there's a fine 18th century mansion, later a residence for
both the late Queen Mother and Prince Charles. Further attractions include
the 19th century wire suspension bridge, Crathie Church, and a path which
takes you to the 700ft summit of Craigendarroch (Hill of Oaks).
