Braemar sits at a height of 1,100ft within the
Cairngorm Mountains, and attracts thousands of visitors each year,
world-famous for its September Highland Games. Frequently attended by the
Queen, this colourful event dates back to the 11th century. The village is
overlooked by the 4,000ft Cairn Toul, while the fortress of Braemar Castle
reminds us of violent times. Nearby, lies Balmoral Castle, transformed into
a royal residence in the Scottish baronial style in the mid-19th century.
