The royal, ancient and, built around a medieval
street plan, Elgin is a key centre for tourists heading for the area of
Moray. A small part of the town’s castle survives but the twice-ruined 13th
century cathedral is considered one of Scotland’s finest. The ruin of Spynie
Palace, once the official home of the Bishops of Moray, whilst the 13th
century Pluscarden Priory has been transformed into a Benedictine abbey. The
museum, one of the finest in the north of Britain, features some of the
oldest dinosaurs ever found in the UK. Bonnie Prince Charlie stayed at
Thunderton House in 1646, the property is now a hotel.
