The ancient royal burgh of Forres in Moray was
created around a medieval street plan, although most of the buildings are
Victorian. Host to both King Duncan and Macbeth, where Macbeth’s
confrontation with a trio of fortune-telling witches took place. A witch’s
stone lies at the foot of Cluny Hill the location where real-life ‘witches’
were burned. Sueno’s Stone, with Pictish carvings dating back to c.900 AD,
marks the victory of Sweyn the Viking over Malcolm III in the early 11th
century. The Falconer Museum is ideal for those interested in local history
while Brodie Castle has exhibitions that include paintings, furniture and
porcelain.
