This pleasant town still retains its individual
character and features many independent local traders in its centre. There
are plans to build an out-of-town retail park, that will help take away this
town's individuality. There are fewer and fewer towns left in the UK where
the high street remains unique. In 1307 that Robert the Bruce defeated John
Comyn, Earl of Buchan, here. Overlooked by Bennachie and its Pictish
hillfort, the village is located on a game fishing river, beside the ruins
of Inverurie Castle. There are several prehistoric sites here and Scottish
warriors were defeated by the Romans in a battle that led to the name,
‘Grampians’.
