The early 14th century monolith is one of the
best preserved medieval castles in Scotland, having been extensively
repaired. The castle, built in the shape of a shield, is reminiscent of many
Welsh castles. In a quarry, nearby lies the Japanese designed Alpine gardens
dating from 1904.
