At Arbroath's ancient Abbey in 1320, Scottish
nobles united and swore independence from England at the famous "Declaration
of Arbroath". The ruins of Arbroath Abbey has a Visitor Centre, managed by
Historic Scotland. Further attractions include a small, miniature railway,
and the award-winning museum. St. Vigeans Archaeological Museum contains one
of Scotland's finest collection of Pictish Stones, is located nearby. Also,
the famous Arbroath Smokie, which the town is takes its name from, can be
purchased direct from one of many smokehouses.
