BEDFORD
This business and industrial centre, important
since the days of the Anglo Saxons, lies on the River Great Ouse. The
Vauxhall company gave its name to Bedford vans, and it's also the birthplace
of the preacher, John Bunyan, twice incarcerated for his unorthodox views in
the local jail. It was here that he began to write his masterpiece, ‘The
Pilgrim’s Progress’. A plaque marks the site of his house, and the Bunyan
Museum is dedicated to his life and works. The mound of a Norman castle
destroyed following a six-week siege in 1224 is all that's left today.
However, Bedford has four historic churches and the five-arched bridge,
essential viewing for visitors to the area. A collection of prints,
decorative arts and a display of Victorian life can be found at the Cecil
Higgins Gallery. US bandleader Glenn Miller was stationed in Bedford during
WWII, his broadcast went out from the local Corn Exchange.
