Named Durocobrivis by the Romans, Dunstable lies
at the junction of two ancient roads, the Roman Watling Street and the
prehistoric Icknfield Way. An Augustinian priory survives, in part, as the
parish church of St. Peter. Dunstable was famous for the making of straw
bonnets, which made way for the production of Vauxhall motorcars in the 20th
century. Dunstable Downs, at the eastern end of the Chiltern Hills, offering
panoramic views and a popular destination for gliding and hang-gliding. The
Downs are home to rare wildlife including the Bee Orchid. Nearby, the
Whipsnade Wild Animal Park, is owned by the Zoological Society of London.
Hollywood actor, Gary Cooper lived in Dunstable as a child and was a pupil
at Dunstable School, he was injured in a road accident when 13 years old and
went to live on his father’s cattle ranch in the US.
