SELKIRK
Sir Walter Scott served as sheriff of Selkirk for
33 years, which stands high above the Ettrick and Yarrow Valleys. The former
courtroom features an audio-visual presentation telling the story of Scott's
associations with the area and its people. The town's oldest dwelling,
Halliwell's House, is now a local museum with links to the ironmongery
trade, and the Robson Gallery provides a venue for exhibitions. Clapperton's
Daylight Photographic
Studio is also a working museum and photographic archive. Visitors to the
town can enjoy free parking. One of the oldest of the Border Festivals,
Selkirk Common Riding takes place in June. The town features many specialist
tweed outlets, whilst the local glass works offers visitors a chance to see
skilled craftsmen at work and buy their products.
