A group of thatched cottages, Georgian houses and
ancient inns line the High Street in Amersham, which is located with the
Chiltern Hills and predates Saxon times. Housed in a 15th century
half-timbered building the local museum features a number of intriguing
fossils and archaeological finds. A monument also commemorates the Lollards,
religious rebels burned at the stake in the 15th and 16th centuries. One of
the town’s most famous sons, the actor Roger Moore, was born here in 1927
and attended a local school.
