AYLESBURY
With roots pre-dating the Saxon period and lying
to the north of the Chiltern Hills, Aylesbury is Buckinghamshire’s county
town. With plenty of old buildings, many separated by narrow Tudor
alleyways. There's the Victorian clock tower and King’s Head tavern, one of
only two working pubs owned by the National Trust. The Prebendal House,
former home to the 18th century satirist John Wilkes, and the town’s square
has a statue of John Hampden, who by refusing to pay Charles l’s Ship Money
tax helped to spark the Civil War. The 13th century local church boasts a
Norman tower. There are a number of true old-world villages, and places that
have appeared in the TV detective series ‘Midsomer Murders’. The
medieval/Tudor manor house Nether Winchendon House has a superb garden, and
the stone gatehouse of Boarstall Tower dates to the 14th century. Its fine
gardens that are surrounded by a moat. Aylesbury is also a commuter town,
serving the London area.
