The Thames-side village of Marlow has a number of
literary connections. Mary Wollstonecraft wrote the horror classic
‘Frankenstein’ while living at Albion House between 1817-1818, whilst
husband Shelley penned his ‘Revolt of Islam’ at the same time. TS Eliot,
also lived in West Street for a short time after WWII. The Old Parsonage is
the oldest building in the area, dating back to the 14th century, and in the
Church of St. Peter, a mummified hand said to have belonged to St. James the
Apostle, is on display. The Crown Hotel was a regular haunt of Dick Turpin,
the infamous highwayman.
