In Orchard Side, the former home of poet William
Cowper (1731-1800), has been turned into the Cowper & Newton Museum. It also
celebrates the life of his slave trading friend, the Rev. John Newton. The
Cowper Memorial Chapel dates from 1879. The village entrance is a stone
gateway (1700). A secret meeting place for leaders of the Gunpowder Plot,
Greyhurst House, once belonged to Sir Francis Drake. The 18th century church
and a gatehouse, which lies adjacent, has been transformed into an inn.
Olney is also renowned for its Shrove Tuesday pancake race, dating back to
the 15th century.
