Middlewich, one of Britain's chief salt-producing
towns, it was the centre of the Roman salt industry. Romans were paid in
salt, called ''sal dare" and it is thought the word "soldier" was derived
from this Latin phrase. Later, the Doomsday Survey recorded the salt laws
and customs introduced. The town also became noted for its cheese. Once the
canal system became vital for transportation, salt was shipped out and coal
in. Local houses were built by the waterways companies, and with the decline
of commercial use, there has been more interest in waterways used for
pleasure. Middlewich has a shopping centre, a modern library, featuring
displays of Roman relics from the salt industry. Leisure attractions include
the rivers and canals, a small park, tennis courts, bowling and putting
greens. The town's Comprehensive School features a modern sports hall, used
jointly by pupils and the public alike.
