popular tourist hotspots since the 19th century. The poet William Wordsworth
worked here, there's a Wordsworth chapel at St. Mary's Church. He once
taught at the Rydal House, nearby. Mrs. Hemans author of ‘the boy stood on a
burning deck’, lived at ‘Dove Nest’. The town features a number of 17th
century buildings, including a watermill. Now a National Trust information
centre, The Bridge House s an interesting folly crossing the beck of Stock
Ghyll. There's also a medieval rush-bearing ceremony at St. Mary's Church
each July.
