Close to the Scottish border, in the beautiful
Eden Valley, Carlisle is rumoured to have been the capital of the ancient
kingdom of Rheged. It's long and remarkable history is displayed in a number
of local museums. A relatively small cathedral, founded in the 12th century
was ravaged by fires in both the 13th and 14th centuries. Sir Walter Scott
married here in 1797. The city has been attacked by Vikings and later from
other marauders, most notably William ‘Braveheart’ Wallace, Robert the
Bruce, Oliver Cromwell and Bonnie Prince Charlie.
