miles, with at least 16 ‘great’ lakes, tarns, valleys,
villages and even beaches! Home to England’s five
highest mountains and the UK’s deepest lake.

en-suite) have telephone, television and
tea/coffee making facilities. Dogs by

restaurant (where local produce is used wherever
possible). The bars offer bar snacks at

A market town in the north of Cumbria, on the
edge of the Lake District National Park. The birthplace of Fletcher
Christian, the leading mutineer on the ‘Bounty’, and poet William
Wordsworth. Wordsworth House, almost demolished to make way for a bus
station, was handed to the National Trust. His life is celebrated by a
stained glass window at the Church of All Saints. A number of museums
include one dedicated to the art of printing, the toy and model museum, and
the 19th century Jennings Brewery, where visitors enjoy guided tours and
fine ales.
