The Lake District National Park covers almost 900 square
miles, with at least 16 ‘great’ lakes, tarns, valleys,
villages and even beaches! Home to England’s five
highest mountains and the UK’s deepest lake.
At the foot of Helvellyn, north of Ambleside,
lies the village of Patterdale. Once an important centre of lead mining and
remembered by Wordsworth when, as a young man he managed to ‘borrow’ a small
boat and launch it onto the vast lake at Ullswater, nearby. Patterdale gave
its name to the ‘Patterdale’ hunting terrier.
