An important industrial town in the 18th century,
it became the largest port in the country after London and Bristol. The
Beacon is a harbour side museum which describes in detail the history of

the grandmother of George Washington lived in the town. The 19th century St.
Nicholas Church is now a ruin following a fire in 1971.
