The famous medieval church was built as a
miniature replica of Exeter Cathedral. An annual Bonfire Night ceremony in
which local folk carry barrels of flaming tar through the streets. Ottery’s
vicarage was the birthplace of the Romantic poet Samuel Taylor Coleridge in
1772. Close by, the 220-acre Escot Gardens, Maze and Fantasy Woodland and
the farm-based attraction of Farway Countryside Park. Ottery St. Mary is
mentioned in the 11th century Domesday Book.
