Red Lion Hotel
The Quay, Clovelly, Devon EX39 5TF
The Red Lion Hotel, an ancient inn, has a dramatic quayside setting in the unique heritage village of Clovelly. Set into a steep hillside, Clovelly is one of the most famous villages in the world. The single cobbled high street winds its way down the hillside through traditional whitewashed cottages festooned with fuchsias and geraniums. The exceptionally comfortable bedrooms, with stunning views, are furnished in seafaring style. Lying in bed you will hear the cries of wheeling seagulls and the sound of the sea playing in and out of the stony beach below your room. Much is said these days about the impact of food miles, but at the Red Lion Harbour Restaurant, we can proudly talk about food feet. Fresh fish is landed daily outside our door. And with seasonal produce from Clovelly Court Gardens, grown to organic principles, together with game from Clovelly estate, our chef has the finest of local ingredients from which to create his dishes.
The 17th century New Inn is hidden deep within the cobbled streets of the picturesque and historic village of Clovelly. Lovely bedrooms, rare views and a wonderful atmosphere are offered to guests. In this traffic-free village, luggage is portered in by a sledge - a short break paradise. The menu uses much fish fresh from the harbour, and game and produce from the estate.
A pedestrian-only fishing village full of
whitewashed cottages and cobbled streets, which descends 400 feet to a
small, quayside and rocky beach. A local old fisherman’s house has been
transformed into a ‘living’ museum. There's also the ‘Kingsley Museum’,
dedicated to the life of the writer, Charles Kingsley who lived in the
village. He wrote the novels ‘Westward Ho!’ and ‘The Water Babies’ here.
Close by tourists may choice to visit the Milky Way Adventure Park, whilst
Clovelly Dykes is an impressive hill fort.
