The largest and most popular of north Devon’s
seaside resorts, this small fishing village was ‘discovered’ by the
beach-loving Victorians. Backed by jagged cliffs, it still retains a
Victorian elegance. The start of a coast-to-coast cycle route that runs
south to Plymouth, Ilfracombe features a number of beaches, including a
private beach accessed via tunnels through the cliffs. The medieval Chapel
of St Nicholas stands on a rock at the entrance to the picturesque harbour,
whist fifteen miles out into the Atlantic, the granite island of Lundy, is
only three and a half miles long and half a mile wide. This National Trust
property only has a few human inhabitants, an yet it issues its own stamps,
is car-free and a haven for puffins. Marisco Castle dates to the 13th
century. The 11th century Chambercombe Manor lies nearby, set in four acres
of beautiful gardens. There's also the 19th century Watermouth Castle, which
offers visitors a dungeon labyrinth, a fountain show, a land of gnomes, and
a children’s ‘Merry-go-land’.
