independence here in 1306, and the poet, Robbie Burns worked here as an
excise man, searching the coves for smugglers. Burns Street is named in his
honour, whilst his house and farm are still standing today. He was buried
within a mausoleum at the local St. Michael’s churchyard. Dumfries is also
