DUMFRIES
Robert the Bruce sparked the Scottish wars of
independence here in 1306, and the poet, Robbie Burns worked here as an
excise man, searching the coves for smugglers. Burns Street is named in his
honour, whilst his house and farm are still standing today. He was buried
within a mausoleum at the local St. Michael’s churchyard. Dumfries is also
the location where J. M. Barrie was inspired to write Peter Pan. The local
skyline is dominated by a tower and a mid-steeple. Interesting local
features include the oldest surviving multiple-arched bridge in Scotland,
Devorgilla Bridge, and Scotland’s oldest working theatre. The Twelve
Apostles, mainland Scotland's largest stone circle by diameter, can be found
nearby.
