With a beautiful rural setting in the spectacular Scottish countryside, this small, family-run hotel is halfway between Lockerbie and Gretna Green, just off the A74(M).
For 250 years plus, the main road from London to
Glasgow passed through the now quiet village of Ecclefechan and brought with
it considerable traffic. The Glasgow to London coach would pause at a
coaching inn, now the Ecclefechan Hotel, on its six-day journey to the
capitol. This quiet backwater was the birthplace of Thomas Carlyle, the
famous philosopher and historian, born in 1795, his childhood home is now a
museum run by the National Trust for Scotland. Features include a recreation
of an 1800's cottage.
