Starting out as a tiny hamlet with just one
gatehouse, the town has now expanded into a small holiday centre. Robbie
Burns, is said to have composed ‘Scots Wha Ha’e’’ here at Gatehouse Of
Fleet. Inspired to write it whilst out walking one day, he is said to have
put the famous words to paper when he reached the Murray Arms Hotel. The
Murrays, an important local family, established many cotton mills along the
banks of the local
river. The towns story is told in dramatic detail at the Mill on the Fleet
Museum.
