The location where the River Esk, Wauchope Water
and Ewes Water come together and are spanned by a series of bridges. One of
these bridges was worked upon by a young apprentice, later the great
bridge-builder Thomas Telford. Langholm is the birthplace of the poet Hugh
MacDiarmid, and home of the Armstrong family, whose famous relation, Neil,
went on to be the first man on the moon. Langholm hosts a annual summer
festival
designed to assert the right of locals to cut peat and bracken. Britain’s
only Buddhist temple can be found nearby in Eskdalemuir.
