sits at the head of Loch Ryan and is a busy ferry port which links Scotland
with Northern Ireland. It may have been a naval base in Roman times. The
16th century Castle of St. John, lies close to the town centre and was once
the local jail. Built to look like a ship, the one-time residence of Ross,
the Victorian explorer Sir John, who established the true position of the
Magnetic North Pole. On the
outskirts of the town, a 200-year-old pool created by a blow hole in the Ice
Age, Port Logan Fish Pond is used to store live sea fish. Whilst the 18th
century Castle Kennedy Gardens was the creation of the Earl of Stair.
Features include ruins, lakes and woodland walks. Its a near to the Logan
Botanic Garden, which is a must-see attraction for tourists to the area.
