The historic city of Durham is located on the
River Wear, which loops around a rocky peninsula. The Cathedral and Castle
give Durham a distinctive skyline. Chosen by monks in 995, as a resting
place for the body of St. Cuthbert, and later as the ideal location for the
Normans to rule the North. The original church containing the relics of St.
Cuthbert made way for Durham Cathedral. The architectural and historical
importance of the Cathedral and Castle is recognised by the UNESCO World
Heritage List. Today, Durham Castle is the heart of University College, one
of twelve colleges within the University, and the third oldest university in
England. During vacation time the Castle is used as a venue for conferences,
banquets and holiday accommodation. Even with its medieval layout, the city
does have a modern shopping centre, and pleasant walks along wooded river
banks. Boat trips are offered on the River Wear. Further afield you can
explore the Durham Dales, which is part of the North Pennine Area of
Outstanding Natural Beauty. Nearby High Force is the largest waterfall in
England.
