Founded some 3,000 years ago and once ruled by
Old King Cole – officially known as King Cunobelin of the Catevellauni tribe
– Colchester is England’s oldest recorded town and one of its most
interesting. The Romans created the first major settlement here but it was
sacked in 55 AD by Queen Boudicca. In the 11th century, the Normans built a
defensive castle whose magnificent keep still stands as a testament to their
workmanship. For a time it was used as a jail for witches.
During the Civil War Colchester witnessed the execution of leading royalists
following a siege in which the townsfolk had little choice but to eat
anything they could lay their hands on.
When Colchester’s fortunes changed it became an important centre in the
cloth-making industry thanks to an influx of Flemish weavers. Today it is a
place of enthralling museums, Roman antiquities and eye-catching bygones.
Even the old Roman walls can still be seen, as can the evocative ruins of St
Biotopes Priory - one of England’s first Augustinian priories - and the 16th
century Bourne watermill.
The town is home to the East Anglian Railway Museum, which has a monumental
collection of period railway paraphernalia – everything from locomotives to
rolling stock and signals. Tympersleys Clock Museum is a unique attraction
dating back to the 15th century. It contains part of one of the largest
collections of clocks in Britain. Colchester Zoo boasts one of the best big
cat and primate collections in Europe.
