A delightful market town on the banks of the
River Chelmer, Great Dunmow has prehistoric origins and is home to the
ancient custom of leap year ‘flitch trials’ in which rival couples have to
prove they are the most happily married. Their prize is a side of bacon.
Once an important market town, Great Dunmow’s history is charted at its
local museum set inside 16th century maltings.
The doctor’s pond in the village was used in 1784 by local man, Lionel Lukin,
to test his design for an “unimmergible” lifeboat. He died in Hythe in 1834
and his epitaph was “This Lionel Lukin was the first who built a
life-boat, and was the original inventor of that principal of safety by
which many lives and property have been preserved from shipwreck.”
The nearby Gardens of Eastern Lodge cover more than 20 acres and include an
Italian garden. Originally created during the Elizabethan period they were
redesigned in 1902 by Harold Peto under a commission from the Countess of
Warwick. Sadly, they were effectively abandoned for nearly half a century
before being restored by the National Trust.
