The Waggon & Horses is a family owned country pub hotel restaurant in North Essex close to the Suffolk county border half way between Colchester and Cambridge near to Halstead; Braintree; Sudbury and Haverhill. The ten bedroom annexe with its horseracing theme is designed for your ultimate comfort.
Lying on the banks of the River Colne, Halstead
has a broad main street that leads to a bridge spanning the river. Its
historic Townsford Mill is a huge three-storey wooden building dating to the
late 18th century. Originally a corn mill, it was later purchased by Samuel
Courtauld as a centre for silk weaving. The local church contains tombs to
the Bourchier family whose most famous member was Sir Robert Bourchier. He
distinguished himself fighting alongside the Black Prince at the Battle of
Crecy in 1346, eventually dying of plague.
