MANNINGTREE

A small market town on the Stour estuary, Manningtree is a haven for sailing enthusiasts. It has notable Georgian buildings and historic taverns. It became notorious in the 17th century when the Witch Finder General, Matthew Hopkins, made Manningtree his headquarters, hanging unfortunate victims on the village green. Adjacent to Manningtree is the village of Mistley where a pair of identical towers are the remains of a medieval church.
