The Cricketers' Arms is an 18th Century inn restored to modern standards without losing any of its period charm. The inn overlooks the famous old cricket pitch at Rickling Green, a classically calm and beautiful English village.
An unspoiled town complete with the ruins of a
Norman castle, Saffron Walden nestles among rolling hills and dates back to
the Middle Ages when it was a major cloth-making centre. At the same time it
grew the saffron crocus – hence its name - from which dye, medicine and food
colourings were derived. The town boasts 400 important buildings and retains
much of its ancient character. Its museum is one of the oldest in England.
The grandiose stately home Audley End House counted royalty among its
glittering guest list. Built in 1603 for the 1st Earl of Suffolk, it
prompted James 1 to say it was too big even for a king. Its splendid gardens
have been painstakingly restored. More gardens can be found at Bridge End.
They date to the Victorian period and feature, among many other things, a
hedge maze.
