BURNTISLAND
A natural harbour in prehistoric times, and there
are claims that the invading Romans, used it as a naval base around AD85.
The Castle of Rossend was built in the 12th century, as the residence of the
Abbots of Dunfermline. Sadly now modernised and is used as offices. The
oldest post-Reformation Kirk still in use today St. Columba's Church, was
originally built in 1594. In 1850 that the world's first rail ferry,
Leviathan, linked
Burntisland to Granton on the other side of the Forth, later replaced by the
Forth Railway Bridge.
