ABERFOYLE
The southern gateway to The Trossachs, Aberfoyle
is an excellent base for walking, cycling, sailing and fly-fishing. Until
the end of the 18th century Aberfoyle was an isolated Highland village, made
famous through the novels of Sir Walter Scott. Once a key centre for slate
quarrying, more than one million roof slates were produced each year at
peak. A ruined Augustine priory on the island of Inchmahome, is where the
young Mary, Queen of Scots fled for her life in 1547. A ferry takes visitors
to this island. Close to the forest of
Loch Ard, the Queen Elizabeth Forest Park and the Lake of Monteith.
