At the head of a sea loch known as Gare Loch,
which is popular with water-sport enthusiasts, Garelochhead achieved
notoriety in 1853 when James Colquhoun, a local laird, tried to prevent
Glaswegian day-trippers from coming ashore. The courts backed his cause and
Sabbath trips were outlawed.
