The town of Stirling on the River Forth is an
ideal location for the history buff. William Wallace was victorious against
the English at the Battle of Stirling Bridge in 1297, while Robert the Bruce
repeated his victory a few miles away at the Battle of Bannockburn 17 years
later. The town’s castle, which glares down from a volcanic crag, was home
to the great Stuart dynasty. Home to the regimental museum of the Argyll and
Sutherland Highlanders, and one of the region’s most romantic gems. Nearby,
the medieval Church of Holy Rude was where James V1 was crowned in 1543. On
the banks of the Forth, the ruins of Cambuskenneth Priory, once one of the
richest abbeys in Scotland.
