Cromarty is situated at the tip of the peninsula known as the Black Isle on
the Cromarty Firth and is reputed to be the best-preserved historic town in
the Scottish Highlands. Called the Capital of the Highlands, it has greatly
benefited from Scotland’s oil riches and boasts many splendid buildings, a
fascinating museum complex and famous bird reserves. Its history is
inextricably linked with the sea and the 19th century herring fishing boom.
Cromarty’s oldest surviving house dates from the late 17th century. The
village was the birthplace of Sir Thomas Urquhart (1611-60), the translator
of Rabelais, and the 20th century geologist Hugh Miller.
