Situated close to Inverness, this is the site of the last battle to be
fought on British soil, the momentous Battle of Culloden, which finally put
paid to Bonnie Prince Charlie’s royal ambitions. It took place on April 16
1746 when an army of 9,000 men led by the Duke of Cumberland slaughtered
more than a fifth of 5,000 Jacobites under the less-than-bonnie prince.
It was all over in under an hour and was the bloody climax to the Prince’s
1745 Rebellion. He was forced to head for the hills, ending up in France.
