Decked out in red stone, Dingwall was the reputed birthplace in the 11th
century of Mac Bethad mac Findláich, King of Scotland (better known as
MacBeth), and lies at the head of the Cromarty Firth. Dating back to the
arrival of Norse warriors, it once controlled a huge expanse of northern
Scotland as well as the Western Isles.
A significant port for hundreds of years, it boasts a harbour built by the
engineer Thomas Telford who transformed part of the River Peffery into a
canal. Its historic tolbooth has an 18th century tower and is home to a
local museum. A traditional Highland music festival is held here each
summer.
Historic buildings include an 18th-century Town House while Foulis Castle -
seat of the Chiefs of the Clan Munro – is nearby.
