Central for touring the Scottish Highlands to Inverness, Ben Nevis, Fort William, Eilean Donan Castle and the Isle of Skye. Lots of great walking nearby, marked forest trails, riverside paths and the Great G more info. . .
The history of this pretty village is inextricably linked with the fortunes
of the MacDonnell clan who built the ill-starred Invergarry Castle on the
so-called ‘Rock of the Raven’ in the 17th century. Cromwell promptly put it
to the torch and though it was repaired it was finally destroyed in 1746
following the Jacobite Rebellion.
Invergarry House, built nearby in the 19th
century, is now a hotel with the castle ruins within its grounds.
Another castle, Glengarry, is nearby, as is the
Well of the Seven Heads monument; this consists of the carved heads of seven
alleged murderers who became victims of the MacDonnell’s summary justice.
