INVERGORDON

This historic port is situated on the north shore of the Cromarty Firth and was a vital Royal Navy base in the First World War. Its deep harbour was built in the early part of the 19th century and is an important cog in the oil industry.

A memorial garden recalls the tragedy of a Royal Navy ship which exploded in 1915 with the loss of 400 crew members. The town also became famous in 1931 when Royal Navy crews mutinied over a pay cut.
