This hotel is in the village of Invermoriston, which lies on the shores of Loch Ness. It pre-dates the Battle of Culloden, as its original parts were built in 1740.
Replete with memories of the rebellious Jacobites, Invermoriston lies on the
banks of Loch Ness and is a charming village that played host to Dr Johnson
and his companion James Boswell as they planned their famous tour of the
Highlands.
A cairn recalls the place where one of Bonnie
Prince Charlie’s bodyguards was killed by English troops after claiming he
was the prince. His deceit delayed the search for the real royal who had
plenty of time to make good his escape.
The Moriston Falls are nearby. Thomas Telford
built an imposing bridge over the River Moriston in the early 18th century.
A nearby well is dedicated to St Columba who reputedly drank from it in
defiance of local druids.
