Lying beneath the magnificent Cairngorm and Monadhliath mountain ranges on
the banks of the mighty River Spey, Kingussie (‘head of the pinewood’) is
part of Scotland’s dramatic ‘great outdoors’ experience. As a typical
Highland destination it offers opportunities for fishing, walking, riding,
sports like shinty and, of course, golf, which has been played here since
the late 19th century on a moorland course.
The
main tourist attraction is the Highland Folk Museum, which boasts a number
of exhibitions about life through the ages in this remarkable part of the
world. These include a replica of a 200-year-old house and a display of
traditional crafts. The town was once an important weaving centre.
Ruthven Barracks - now a romantic ruin built atop an earlier castle - once
commanded a major crossing over the Spey. It was built in 1718 as part of
the Highland campaign to control the Jacobites. They defied the odds to
capture it and blow it up!
The town is home to the
Drumguish whisky distillery and only dates from the 18th century when it was
founded by the Duke of Gordon. Its importance grew after bridges were built
over the Spey and the River Laggan.
It was also here that the wedding took
place of Hester Cattanach and the late Alex Renouf whose work with
Priory Publications laid the foundations for Tourist Net UK. Sadly Alex
passed away Dec 24th 2006.
