This second floor
apartment is in a prime position within the
walls of this great castle. Until late Victorian
times, the building housed the officers
garrisoned at the Castle and from its windows
there is a wonderful panorama sweeping over the
main courtyard, the ancient ramparts, the
gatehouse and the former home of Princess
Beatrice. She was Queen Victoria’s youngest and
favourite daughter who was once a Governor of
the Isle of Wight.
Each English Heritage holiday cottage has a
story to tell: its past inextricably linked
with an historic house, a fortified castle or
a great estate. But rather than try to
recreate that past in our interiors we’ve
chosen instead to reflect the best of
contemporary design.

Set on the outskirts of
Newport town in the beautiful Bowcombe valley,
with views of Carisbrooke Castle. Dairy Cottage
is a recently renovated three-bed roomed cottage
consisting of three double bedrooms, one with a
double bed and the other two with twin beds.
All linen is provided as
well as a cot if necessary. The lounge is large
and spacious, equipped with a wood-burning
stove, television and music system. There is
also a selection of records to play and books to
read. The farmhouse style kitchen is fully
equipped with the following; Fridge-freezer,
Cooker, Microwave, Dishwasher, Washing machine,
Spin dryer, Tumble dryer, Toaster, Chip-pan
fryer, sandwich toaster and payphone. The
bathroom is upstairs, with a toilet and
shower-room downstairs. The cottage is fully
centrally heated for cooler evenings. On arrival
at the cottage a small welcome hamper is
provided. The cottage is also close to two very
good restaurants, and is only twenty minutes
drive to one of the islands best beaches -
Compton Bay. A network of footpaths and
bridleways also surrounds dairy Cottage.
This former cricket
pavilion was built in the early 1900’s for the
young officer cadets at the Royal Naval College.
The pitch has long since reverted to fields, but
the pavilion’s long south-facing verandah is now
a peaceful place to relax and enjoy the quiet of
a summer evening.
Guests in this
cottage also have use, subject to access, of a
private shingle beach once used exclusively by
the Royal Family. It is easily reached from the
cottage by a mile and half long estate roadway.
Pavilion Cottage is within a half-mile easy walk
of Osborne House where there are countless
insights into a Victorian royal family life on
show.
