Of all the Medway towns, Rochester with its connections to Charles Dickens offers the most to the visitor. A narrow high street full of antique and book shops is easily complemented by a beautiful Norman castle and cathedral. The hotel is easily accessible from the M2,J3 and M20, J6 motorways. Chatham with its historic Dockyard, Museum and shopping outlet is also close by.
At the mouth of the River Medway, Chatham was
once an important naval base. Henry VIII turned this sleepy fishing village
into a major dockyard, which is now open to the public. Hundreds of Royal
Navy ships, including Nelson’s HMS Victory, were built here and visitors can
travel through 400 years of maritime history at the Museum of the Royal
Dockyard. The Royal Engineers Museum, one of Britain’s foremost military
museums, contains 6,000 items, including Wellington’s map of Waterloo.
Charles Dickens lived in Chatham as a boy from 1817 to 1821.
