On a clear day from the towering chalk monoliths
of the White Cliffs of Dover you can see France, 21 miles away. In 55BC it
was at or near Dover that Julius Caesar landed with 6,000 men in 80 boats.
His invasion of Britain began and later, the Angles, Jutes, and Saxons
settled here. William the Conqueror’s half brother, the Bishop Odo of
Bayeux, arrived with prefabricated parts for a castle. Most of the fish for
London’s markets were supplied from the region. The clifftop Norman castle
protects the harbour, and is one of the earliest castles containing
concentrically-arranged fortifications. Possibly the earliest Roman
lighthouse in Britain is also nearby. The Dover Museum features a re-created
Bronze Age boat, the first cross channel ferry, which dates back to a time
before the pyramids.
