from the sea and is dominated by the distinctive tower of St Mildred’s
Church, dating back to the 12th century. One of the county’s most

clearing. It rose to fame as a centre for the wool trade. Despite being
reasonably affluent, a number of local people joined Wat Tyler’s Peasant’s
Revolt.
