Officially known as Royal Tunbridge Wells, this
beautiful spa town owes its fame to the medicinal chalybeate spring
discovered in 1606 by a nobleman. Over the years it became increasingly
popular with the aristocracy, rivalling Brighton and Bath. Its oldest
surviving street is the arcaded Pantiles, with its quaint shops, restaurants
and inns, and dates back to 1700. King Edward VII granted the town royal
status in 1909.
